Georgia

Case against Giorgi D.

In 2014 the Georgian authorities requested extradition of Giorgi D. He is accused of ordering the torture and being involved in the murder of three detainees as head of a security service. D. was arrested in June 2014.

On 14 November 2014, the district court of The Hague has deemed extradition to be permissible. The court decided it not proven that extradition of D. was requested for the prosecution of a political crime. D. appealed to this decision and the Supreme Court of the Netherlands dismissed the appeal on 9 June 2015.

The Minister of Security and Justice has allowed the extradition of D. on 3 September 2015. D. has appealed to this decision. This appeal was dismissed in November 2015, as the court did not find any new evidence or circumstances which could affect the decision. D. appealed to this judgment. The The Hague Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal on 15 March 2016. D. was extradited to Georgia on 20 March 2016.
