33-year-old man extradited from Dubai at the request of the Netherlands

A 33-year-old man has been extradited from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Netherlands. The man has been convicted twice by the Amsterdam District Court. These cases are now under appeal. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the man will be arrested. Due to a previously issued arrest warrant, he is being held in pre-trial detention.

Stabbing incident and smuggling drugs

The man originating from Amsterdam was sentenced by the Amsterdam District Court to six years in prison for large-scale drugs smuggling. He had previously been sentenced to 1,5 years in prison for stabbing his cousin.  In the drugs trial, the court issued an arrest warrant. This allowed the suspect to be taken into custody immediately upon arrival in The Netherlands.

Arrested at the request of the Netherlands

The suspect did not attend the court hearings because he was staying in Russia, where he lived and worked. He did not respond to summonses to appear at the hearings in his court cases. When he travelled to Dubai in March 2024, he was arrested by the local authorities. Shortly afterwards, the Netherlands requested the United Arab Emirates to extradite the suspect. Due to the constructive cooperation between the UAE and the Netherlands, the man has now been extradited.

The two criminal cases will be heard jointly on appeal. No substantive hearing date has yet been scheduled.
